This year’s World Nuclear Energy Day theme is “A Chain Reaction” which highlights community, the progress built over the years, and a dedication to continuously raising awareness. One of the main focuses for this year is how clean nuclear energy will contribute to reaching net-zero carbon emissions.
Nuclear energy is a crucial form of power generation across North America. In the U.S., nuclear power plants generated enough electricity in 2021 to power over 70 million homes. In fact, nuclear energy provided half of America’s carbon-free electricity in 2021, which makes it the largest domestic source of clean energy. Canada is one of the largest producers and exporters of uranium and nuclear fuel services in the world. Four of Canada’s nuclear generating stations provide around 15% of the country’s total electricity generation.
Nuclear energy is not only an essential form of power generation that supports millions of people across the world, but also a tool to help combat climate change. The World Nuclear Association notes that the use of nuclear energy today avoids emissions roughly equivalent to removing one-third of all cars from the world’s roads.
Nuclear power capacity is continuing to increase worldwide as well, with new reactors under construction across the globe. As the number of nuclear energy plants increases, nuclear radiation shielding products and solutions become an essential component of safe nuclear energy generation.
